Client Case Study: Hove Library

Background: Hove library is based in Church Road in Hove, East Sussex. Since opening in 1908, it has been an important landmark and resource for the local community. In 2005, the doors closed to begin a major improvement programme. The interior of the building was refurbished and painted, paying particular attention to the many period architectural features including coving and ceiling decoration.

Lighting for the library was high on the agenda. Horsell Electrics were commissioned by local electrical contractors, AJ Taylor to provide a bespoke lighting scheme for the interior.

• The requirement was a suspended continuous lighting system that could give some measure of uplighting, to highlight the ceilings, as well as a category 2 requirement for VDT screens

• Being a period building, the ceilings were extremely high, and the luminaries had to be suspended on wires

• Additionally, this scheme needed balanced and uniform illumination in all of the six areas requiring new lighting (including a children’s area)

 

We based the lighting system around the popular T5 DSW range using the twin 1500mm 49W high output option, supplied with a polished aluminium louvre.We produced special infill sections and corner pieces with through wiring to complement the contoured body. Each section could be bolted together easily. The number of luminaries varied depending on the area involved – the largest assembly contained 10 twin 49W units and the smallest had 4.

 

The assemblies were suspended on 1M long adjustable cables. We succeeded in our aim to provide a contemporary solution that contrasted well with the period features of the interior of the Library without being intrusive.
